8/4/09  The Great Kitty Rescue!

The Funny Farm Animal Sanctuary in Georgia is a big fan of Twitter and an even bigger fan of kitties in need. On 8/4/09 around 3pm we saw a post that the Barrow Shelter kitties were going to be put down the next morning. We had everyone spread the word but knew it wouldn't help save many lives. We have been on rescue missions to Barrow three times in the past & are very impressed by how much the workers do to try and save the animals. We had the room but not the funding to spay/neuter & vaccinate the kitties, so we came up with an idea. We have about 1500 people that follow The Funny Farm on Twitter. We told them that if they spread the word and helped us raise $500 by the next morning we would rescue what we thought were 12 kitties. In a little over an hour our followers had managed to raise all $500. We called Officer Watkins and found out that there were about 28 cats & kittens. After what our followers did for us there was no way we could let any of the kitties die that day so we took them all. We consider this Twitters First Official Group Animal Rescue due to how many people were involved in saving the kitties. Thank you all for a great effort & an amazing outcome.

HI, I adopted this kitty from your shelter! She is wonderful. When you talk to her, she lays on her back and rolls around for you to rub her tummy! I love her so much. We named her Athena!
Thank you

I adopted Bailey in January, 2006. He was in a litter of 9 puppies abandoned on the side of the road on that frigid day. He is the light of my life!

STORMY
We don't have a picture of Stormy but here is her story!

I would like to tell you, I adopted Stormy at the Barrow County Animal Shelter, and she was the best cat I have ever had.  Im looking for a picture of her but haven't been able to find one.  She was a ragdoll - Himalayan mix and I had her for 4 years.  She fetched a ball, and walked my kids to the bus stop every morning.  I miss her alot, and now I do have another kitten that a wild cat had, that looks almost just like her, I can just hope and pray that she has her personality, that will be hard to match.  Just wanted to let anyone thinking about getting an animal from the pound but has reservations about it, just try it, I did and do not regret it.  Next spring I will be looking for a dog about a year old and I will be getting it from Barrow County Animal Control.
 Thanks
Kim

This cat always makes me smile.
Where did he learn to want to climb in the refridgerator?
Every time the door is open, he is right there to look inside, as if shopping.
He makes us laugh alright. We love this cat soo much.
[adopted on 7-23-08]
Thank you . He is a beauty !
